The Regicide --Col. Daniel Axtell, 1622-1660.
- Gov. Samuel B. Axtell (1819-1893)
- Samuel Beach Axtell was territorial governor of Utah 1874-75 (To: Utah's Territorial Governors) and New Mexico 1875-78 in the days of the Wild West. Here is his biography
from the 1945 Genealogy and some New York Times
articles about him. I found the articles using the NY Times Name Index. Axtell, Utah
and Mt. Axtell, Colorado were possibly named after him. He is mentioned in a couple of Westerns (additional info). He was succeeded in 1878 by Lew Wallace, author of
Ben Hur. Territorial governors, it should be remembered, were political
appointments and not elected positions.
- Lt. Gen. George Clifton Axtell
(1920- )
- "The Big Ax" was a noted World War II flying ace.
- Rev. Henry Axtell (1773-1829)
- Henry (6-39) is one of the
founders of Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, NY. He was the first American Axtell
to get a college degree and probably the earliest American Axtell to have a
surviving portrait.

Check out Frances Axtell at the Seattle Times' Centennial website. She was elected to the Washington State Legislature in 1912 and ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination to the U.S. Senate in 1922. As with most women, her accomplishments are not mentioned in the 1945 Genealogy, but she was probably Frances (Cleveland) Axtell, wife of William Henry Axtell (9-613), a physician in Bellingham, WA.
